Today, with a mix of nostalgia and pride, we gather as the UCA Datalab one last time to celebrate a significant achievement within our midst. It is with great honor and admiration that we congratulate Daniel Precioso and his supervisor David Gómez-Ullate, brilliant members of our family, on successfully defending their doctoral thesis on Data Science and Machine Learning for the Blue Economy.
Daniel’s defense began by showcasing the various impactful projects he partook in during his research years within our collaborative space. From research on energy via non-intrusive load monitoring to studies on health, analyzing non-pharmaceutical interventions’ effects on slowing down the spread of COVID (see here) and the development of smart cameras to monitor preterm babies and ensure their well-being (see here).
The thesis then delved into sustainable fishing and weather routing, applying cutting-edge data science techniques to promote efficiency and sustainability in ocean-related industries.
We commend Daniel and David on earning the highest honors of Cum Laude, a testament to the remarkable caliber of their work and the impact of their research on the field. Additionally, we extend our praise to Javier Jiménez and Fran Amor, who were present at the presentation, for their valuable research contributions during our last year. Lastly, we were deeply honored to have two distinguished members of our group, Bernabé Dorronsoro and Ángel Ruiz, serving as part of the tribunal, further affirming the excellence and expertise within our collaborative community.
As the UCA Datalab, we stand united in our mission to advance the frontiers of data-driven research. Together, we have conducted groundbreaking research in diverse fields, including health, energy, and beyond, making significant contributions to academia and beyond.
Though this marks the end of a chapter, it also marks the beginning of new opportunities for each member of our esteemed team. As we part ways, we take with us the memories of our collaborations, shared discoveries, and the impact of our collective work.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to each member of the Datalab for your unwavering dedication and passion for advancing the boundaries of knowledge.
Congratulations once again to Daniel and David, whose achievements exemplify the transformative power of data-driven research. With profound gratitude for the journey we have shared, we look forward to the exciting opportunities that lie ahead.
